our history
When Si Barry crashed his rental car in Texas in 1988, Brixton was born.
Or near enough. Needing a job to earn back the insurance deposit that should have been his airfare back to the UK, Si ended up door-to-door fundraising for a peace movement in L.A. His colleagues, who later became his housemates too, were Ultimate players.
Having already been introduced to the game on the East Coast, Si was thrilled. He fell in love with Ultimate and found himself at home in the sport’s community. It was no surprise then that on Si’s return to the UK in 1989, he brought Ultimate with him. Pre-Internet, he plastered posters around Surrey University to find throwing buddies and after a couple of years the group started playing pick-up games in Greenwich Park, often encouraging unsuspecting passers-by to pick up a disc and join in.
It wasn’t until a conversation with a friend of a friend that Si learnt his group of frisbee players weren’t the only ones in the country, as they had assumed! The friend, who played for Shotgun Wedding (which would later evolve into Clapham), introduced Si to Ultimatum - the British Ultimate Federation’s printed newsletter, containing details of tournaments and other Ultimate news. The team then moved to practise outdoors on Clapham Common, where other teams trained, and played their first ever match against Miranda Deep Space.
With a whole new world opening up, Si decided the team he'd built would need a name. ‘Angels’ was chosen, inspired by the female fighter pilots from the 60s puppet show Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. When the club started regularly training indoors at Brixton Rec, the name went on to become ‘Brixton Angels’, and is now simply ‘Brixton’, with our hometown displayed in iconic bold lettering across the front of our kit, which hasn’t changed since around the year 2000.
Our 32 year history makes us one of the oldest Ultimate clubs in the UK, and hundreds of players have put on a Brixton shirt at some point in their frisbee careers. Join the legacy today!
